How I Made My First 100,000 UGX Online Without Prior Experience in Uganda

The Struggle is Real

I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t grow up thinking I’d make money online. In fact, when I first heard about “earning online,” I thought it was either a scam or something only tech-savvy people could do.

I was living in Kampala, surviving on my small salary, and struggling to cover rent and groceries. One day, after spending my last 5,000 UGX on food, I said to myself:

There has to be a way to make more money without working 24/7 in a physical office.

That’s when I decided to experiment with online hustles, even though I had no website, no followers, and no idea what I was doing. I want to share my exact journey, including all the mistakes, the first victories, and how you can do the same.

Picking the First Hustle

I started by testing micro-tasks and small online jobs that Ugandans could actually access.

I tried offering simple services like canva flyers and caption writing tasks.

I tried selling via WhatsApp & Facebook groups.  Small electronics like phone chargers, earphones, and even airtime bundles.

What I learned, Don’t overcomplicate things. Pick one task, try it, and focus. I initially tried five platforms at once… disaster. I got overwhelmed and lost my first week.

The First Sale (And the Nervousness)

My first online “win” came from selling a phone charger via WhatsApp. I messaged a local Facebook group:

“Hey friends, I just got this durable phone charger from Jumia. It’s affordable and works perfectly. DM me if you want one!

I honestly didn’t expect anyone to buy. Two hours later, someone replied. 15,000UGX  landed in my mobile money account.

I nearly dropped my phone. I danced in my room. That small payment made me realize:

“Wait… this actually works.”

Making Mistakes (And Learning Fast)

Not everything worked. I made plenty of mistakes:

1. Promoting random products: I tried imported slippers. They never arrived. Lost 30,000 UGX.

2. Spamming links: I sent links without context in WhatsApp groups. People ignored me.

3. Thinking I’d get rich overnight: My first week, I barely made 50,000 UGX, and I felt discouraged.

Mistakes aren’t failures—they are lessons you can turn into strategy. Focus on products people actually need, and share your experience authentically.

Scaling to 100,000 UGX

Once I found products people trusted (phone accessories, digital products on Selar), I started scaling:

Shared mini reviews and personal testimonials in WhatsApp and Facebook groups

Added photos and proof of the products I bought

Tracked what sold and repeated it

Within two weeks, I earned over 100,000 UGX. It wasn’t magic—it was action, persistence, and learning from the early mistakes.

Tips for Anyone Starting in Uganda

1. Start small: Focus on 1–2 products or services.

2. Use platforms Ugandans trust: WhatsApp, Facebook, Selar, Jumia.

3. Be personal: People buy from real humans, not spammy links.

4. Track everything: Know which products and messages are working.

5. Fail fast, learn faster: Every mistake teaches something valuable.

Your First 100,000 UGX is Possible

Making your first 100,000 UGX online in Uganda doesn’t require a website, a huge budget, or technical skills. All it takes is:

Action

Patience

Smart product selection

Authentic sharing

Start today. Pick one product, share your first link, and watch what happens. The first payment might be small, but the confidence it gives you? Priceless.
